History

The Advent Group has its roots in the Lloyd's Insurance Market. Advent has been witness to the transformation from unlimited liability 'Names' capital backing Lloyd's businesses to the largely corporate capital structures which exist today.

Our business is one of the longest established in Lloyd's. Syndicate 780 commenced trading in 1974 and Advent thrives today as a wholly owned subsidiary of Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited under our management team led by CEO Nigel Fitzgerald.

Following the introduction of corporate capital at Lloyd’s, Advent Capital (Holdings) PLC was formed in 1994 and first provided capital backing to Syndicate 780 in 1995. This has grown steadily to the current day, with Advent’s own capital now providing the entire capacity for the Group.

Advent Capital was listed on AIM in June 2005. At that time Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited was a substantial minority shareholder

In August 2009 Fairfax bought the outstanding shares of Advent and since then Advent has continued to trade in the Lloyd's insurance and reinsurance markets whilst benefitting from the support of Fairfax.

In November 2012 Nigel Fitzgerald joined Advent and is currently Chief Executive Officer. Mr Fitzgerald has extensive international Insurance and Reinsurance experience. Prior to this appointment he was most recently Senior Vice President at Crum & Forster, Fairfax' US based Insurance company.

Under Mr Fitzgerald's leadership Advent has evolved from a reinsurance to a specialty focussed business.

In 2013 William Beveridge joined Advent from Syndicate 2012 as Chief Underwriting Officer.

Advent has re engineered its business in recent years and for 2017 will write over 80% of its premium in specialty insurance lines.
